This scenario below is because the sid is not set.
If you set oracle_sid=xxxx, and then simply type sqlplus
and enter username/password when prompted, you will not
get ORA-12560 (See ORA-12560.ora-code.com).
The other servers must have oracle_sid set.

.......... peculiarity on this server that, if I open a DOS
window and simply type "sqlplus ", then I 'm asked for a username and
password, which I supply, and then I get an error message ORA-12560 (See ORA-12560.ora-code.com):
TNS:protocol adapter error.
If however I type "sqlplus myuserid/mypasswd@(protected) ", ,,,,,,,,,,
I suspect
